It gives us a sense of identity and makes us look/feel great. And now more than ever, it also doesn't take a huge toll on our spending. Most of us can easily switch up our styles, try out a new trend, or update our wardrobe anytime. Great isn't it?
There is however a dark side to this behaviour of fast fashion consumption which impacts our environment and society in immense ways. Fact of the matter is, fashion makes the list of top 5 largest global polluters. Here are some quick global facts:
billion cubic meters of water consumed
million tons of carbon dioxide energy emissions
million tons of waste produced
million workers paid less than 120% of minimum wage
million injuries recorded
So how can we all create change & have a positive impact?
Rent and re-use. When you know you will only wear a piece once or twice, opt for renting. Not only do you save personal costs, you also help maximize the life of that garment by sharing within our community. Each time you rent, you are helping to save our planet’s key resources:
- 30 lbs of Carbon Dioxide saved
- 4557 gallons of Water saved
- 3 lbs of Waste saved
This means that if every woman in Toronto rented just once instead of buying, we would save a total of:
- 42M lbs of Carbon Dioxide
- 5 billion gallons of Water
- 2M lbs of Waste
