Bags are one of my favourite things to shop for. I love all types of bags - tote , purses, cosmetic bags, laundry bags. You name it, I probably own one or 10. One type of bag that we often forget, however, are grocery or shopping bags.
For groceries or shopping, we typically rely on plastic bags. The readily available plastic bags at grocery stores or fast fashion stores are horrible for our environment. Though these bags are convenient, they ultimately end up in landfills or littered all over our soil and waters. Plastic is non-biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to break down. You may be well-intentioned and throw these plastic bags into the recycling. However, recycling plastic bags is often too expensive and thus these bags end up in landfills anyways.
There really is no good solution for plastic when it comes to disposal, so the key to being eco-friendly when it comes to plastic bags is to avoid using them altogether. To do that, I have a few sustainable (and chic!) solutions for you to cut plastic bags out of your routine:
1. NET BAGS
These light and simple bags made of string are cheap, versatile, and stylish. They're sturdy enough to hold groceries, gentle enough to put clothing in, and cute enough to carry around solo. They come in various different colours, but I personally prefer neutral tones for maximum versatility.
2. FABRIC BAGS
Take a note from Free People and start carrying around these boho chic fabric bags. If you shop from Free People, you probably already own a stash of these bags, so start utilizing them! I used to use them to carry around changes of clothing, but they're fantastic for grocery shopping as well. In addition, these bags can easily be cleaned along with your laundry in the wash.
3. STRAW BASKETS
These little (or big) baskets are super cute and chic. They're sturdy and structured, so you don't have to worry about any of your groceries falling through. However, clothing may get caught on the straw, so perhaps stay away from using it as clothing storage, or get a lined basket. These bags are so versatile and add a summer vibe to any outfit.
4. CANVAS TOTE BAGS
Ahh! I love totes! Especially tote bags you get from some place meaningful, like a museum you really enjoyed, or a souvenir shop from your favourite city. They're a simple statement that blends seamlessly into your everyday outfit.
Go get yourself one of these chic and eco-friendly grocery and shopping bag alternatives and start saying no to plastic bags! You'll no longer be lugging around not-so-fashionable plastic bags and risk them breaking or cutting off the blood circulation to your finger. You'll now have reusable, reliable, and fashionable bags for all your everyday needs.
